Projects / STGM Architecture’s head office
STGM’s head office in Québec City: a bright, comfortable, collaborative, and inspiring work environment, housed in a LEED Platinum–certified wooden building.
A workplace that embodies creativity, sustainability, and collaboration
Built more than ten years ago, this distinctive building continues to stand out in the evolving landscape of D’Estimauville, in the Beauport district of Québec City. Strategically located between the city and the river, this redeveloping area became home to the STGM Architecture headquarters, the first fully private construction project to take shape in the sector.
This 922 m² building, spread over two levels, brings together under one roof all of the group’s practices: architecture, design, real estate planning, heritage, wayfinding, building science, as well as code and standards consulting. All of these teams actively participated in the design and realization of the project, which today remains a compelling showcase of the firm’s collective expertise.
This close collaboration made it possible to create a bright, comfortable, and inspiring work environment, where efficiency, sustainability, and well-being are thoughtfully integrated.
Built for performance and sustainability
From the outset, STGM set ambitious goals for environmental performance, targeting LEED-NC Platinum certification. The project’s guiding principles — comfort, simplicity, and coherence — shaped every design decision.
The building accommodates around sixty architects and technologists in open, naturally lit studios complemented by private offices, meeting rooms, and collaborative spaces that foster dialogue and creativity.
Light, structure, and openness
Given the soil conditions, the team adopted a lightweight wood structure combining engineered and solid lumber. This approach minimized environmental impact while achieving 13-meter open spans, creating flexible, unobstructed work areas.
The north-south orientation and generous glazing maximize daylight throughout the day, enhanced by six skylights that bring soft, natural light deep into the interior. White surfaces and raw wood elements amplify brightness while maintaining warmth and material honesty.
Comfort and environmental control
User well-being was central to the design. Natural cross-ventilation, operable windows, and zoned mechanical systems allow for efficient air and temperature control. Smart LED fixtures automatically balance artificial lighting with daylight, optimizing both comfort and energy efficiency.
Responsible materials and reuse
Sustainability extends to the careful use of materials. Reclaimed wood from historic homes in the Québec region was incorporated into the interiors, while reused furniture and millwork from STGM’s previous offices found new life in the project. Local, low-VOC, and recycled materials were prioritized throughout, reinforcing both environmental integrity and aesthetic coherence.
A living showcase of collective expertise
More than an office building, the STGM Headquarters represents a living expression of the firm’s values : collaboration, simplicity, and sustainable innovation. It stands as both a workplace and a manifesto, embodying STGM’s belief that thoughtful architecture can enhance life, community, and the future.
