A station rooted in its surroundings, designed to endure
Developed in collaboration with CIMAISE, the new Sûreté du Québec Police Station in Waterloo showcases contemporary architecture where wood, durability, and site integration play a central role.
Architecture in dialogue with the landscape
From the earliest sketches, the team envisioned the building as an organic extension of its site. Its expressive volume draws inspiration from the surrounding hills, while the thoughtful use of natural materials such as slate and wood reinforces its harmonious integration into the landscape.
A hybrid structure supporting a singular form
To achieve this distinctive geometry, a mixed structural system was selected: steel columns, primary beams, and bracing elements support a lightweight wood roof structure. This combination provides the flexibility needed to realize an unconventional volume while ensuring robustness and stability.
Wood as a vector of warmth and well-being
The use of wood was maximized to create warm and welcoming spaces. The striking soffit at the main entrance and the ceilings in the public areas illustrate its thoughtful application. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, wood enhances interior environmental quality and contributes to the well-being of occupants.
Environmental performance and a highly efficient envelope
Beyond its economic and architectural benefits, wood helps reduce the building’s carbon footprint thanks to its natural ability to sequester carbon. The station also features a high-performance perfect wall envelope, combining high-quality insulating materials with advanced construction techniques to minimize thermal bridging.
This approach ensures strong energy efficiency and contributes to the fight against climate change.
