Projects / Poste de police de Kawawachikamach
Located at the heart of the Naskapi Nation reserve, the brand-new police station embodies a public safety project tailored to the values, needs, and climatic and territorial constraints specific to this Indigenous community.
Faced with major functional and physical shortcomings of the existing police station, which made the building unsuitable for the needs of the Nation and its police force, STGM Architecture was entrusted with the mandate to design a new facility that incorporates the latest trends in office design and complies with current public safety standards and regulations.
Site integration
Harmoniously integrated into the surrounding landscape and respecting the local architecture of the village, the new police station spans 534 m² on a single level. It houses various administrative services such as a reception area, the police chief’s office, and a conference room. It also includes an interrogation room, six cells including one dedicated to youth detainees, a guard post, an outdoor yard for detainees, as well as storage areas, locker rooms, and a kitchen.
Recognized expertise in public safety
Meticulous work was carried out to optimize the interior layout, circulation, and acoustics, considering the building’s limited footprint, while ensuring safety and confidentiality throughout the facility.
Beyond its aesthetic harmony with the natural environment, the choice of a lightweight wood frame structure combined with prefabrication techniques gives the building remarkable ecological qualities. This prefabrication approach allowed walls to be assembled off-site, where materials and labor are more readily available, and then transported to Northern Quebec—resulting in substantial savings in both cost and time.
