A large-scale training campus rooted in heritage
Located within the former Séminaire de Nicolet, the École nationale de police du Québec combines the enhancement of a historic site with the integration of extensive contemporary facilities. The project transforms a landmark heritage complex into a functional and versatile campus dedicated to police training.
A historic site transformed into a modern training hub
Housed in the former Séminaire de Nicolet, built in the early 19th century and designated a heritage monument by Québec’s Ministry of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, the École nationale de police du Québec (ENPQ) occupies nearly 1,000,000 square feet of buildings, combining new construction with major renovations. This vast complex brings together heritage conservation and contemporary infrastructure tailored to today’s police training requirements.
Comprehensive facilities in support of learning
The program includes two multimedia amphitheatres with seating capacities of 280 and 100, a sports complex featuring a double gymnasium, a semi-olympic swimming pool, and a fitness room with locker rooms and services, a cafeteria with food services, a 27-lane shooting range, training rooms, crime scene laboratories, and administrative spaces. Together, these facilities provide a versatile, high-performance, and secure learning environment.
A site-wide landscape redevelopment
The 900,000-square-foot site underwent a complete redevelopment and now includes a 600-space parking facility integrated with landscaped areas and outdoor gathering spaces. The site planning enhances clarity, accessibility, and the overall user experience.
Complex challenges addressed through a rigorous approach
The project presented significant challenges related to the scale of the building, the diversity of existing construction systems, and the wide range of functions to be integrated. The fast-track delivery process selected by the client, combined with the requirement to keep the facility operational throughout construction, required the design team to make rapid, strategic decisions. A clear and efficient architectural concept was therefore adopted to meet both budgetary objectives and the phased occupancy schedule.
