Projects / STO Transit Center in Gatineau
A new transit center to support Gatineau’s growth
In response to the sustained increase in public transit ridership in Gatineau, the Société de transport de l’Outaouais undertook the development of a second transit center in the eastern part of the city.
Over the past ten years, the population of Gatineau has experienced significant growth, resulting in increased travel flows and a substantial rise in public transit ridership. Consequently, the number of buses required within the Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) network has grown, along with the number of employees associated with the organization. The expansion of STO’s transit operations led to an increase in the bus fleet from 186 vehicles in 1994 to 312 in 2013.
To respond to this growth and address the lack of parking capacity, the STO initiated the construction of a second public transit center in the eastern sector of the City of Gatineau. This new facility can accommodate 192 standard 40-foot buses or 128 articulated 62-foot buses. It also includes maintenance and repair workshops adapted for articulated and hybrid buses, as well as administrative spaces.
The STO mandated STGM Architecture to design the new public transit center, prepare the construction drawings and specifications, and oversee construction. The mandate included administrative offices, maintenance and repair workshops, a fueling area, and an indoor bus parking facility.
