Projects / Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures Multifunctional Sports Complex
A multifunctional sports complex combining technical performance, an integrated environmental strategy, and a sustainable response to community needs.
A community-focused facility
Faced with the end of life of the Acti-Vital sports center, the City of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures took advantage of a financial assistance program in 2012 to build a new multifunctional complex. Rather than investing in costly renovations and code upgrades, the City opted for a modern facility that meets the recreational and athletic needs of the population while serving as a key driver of municipal development.
Major technical and budgetary challenges
The project involved several challenges, including cost control, energy performance, and site integration. To avoid expensive excavation work, the pool was positioned at the same level as the public hall—three meters above ground level. Excavated soil was reused to create large planted berms, reducing transportation costs and exterior finishing needs while improving the building’s thermal performance.
An integrated environmental strategy
Designed with a strong environmental focus, the complex was developed in close collaboration with electromechanical engineers to meet the City’s sustainability goals. The berms, which partially bury the building, reduce the need for exterior cladding and enhance thermal efficiency, particularly for the ice rinks. The use of insulated prefabricated panels in the City’s colors also helped reduce construction time and costs.
A turnkey, complete and versatile facility
The building includes two NHL-size ice rinks with seating for 571 and 283 spectators, eleven locker rooms, a semi-Olympic pool with a diving board and adjacent recreational basin, a training room, two multipurpose rooms, and a café. Delivered as a turnkey project with the general contractor, the complex reflects a rigorous, sustainable approach tailored to community needs.
