The essential role of architects in major transportation projects: the case of the West REM
August 25, 2023
Large-scale public transportation projects are complex undertakings that require multidisciplinary expertise to ensure their success. The West Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is a strong example of a project in which architects play a central role that goes well beyond the design of the stations themselves. This ambitious public transit project currently connects the South Shore to downtown Montréal via the new Champlain Bridge, marking a first major milestone in the implementation of the network. Over the coming years, the REM will expand from Montréal’s Central Station to the western part of the island, including Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, Anse-à-l’Orme, and Deux-Montagnes.
Assessment, integration, and conceptualization
From the earliest planning phases of the West REM, STGM Architecture’s transportation specialists (then operating under the name COBALT) played a crucial role. Architects contributed to defining the transportation mode, establishing functional criteria related to operations, and determining service levels for future users. In collaboration with CIMA+, they then designed intermodal stations with a strong focus on urban integration. These initial phases required not only a thorough understanding of user needs, but also careful coordination with existing transportation systems such as the metro and bus networks.

Station design and urban integration
STGM Architecture distinguished itself in particular through the development of functional concepts for the future REM stations. The firm validated station capacities and worked on the feasibility of complex stations in terms of urban insertion and connectivity with the various transportation networks of the metropolitan region. This meticulous approach made it possible to design transit spaces that integrate harmoniously into the urban fabric while addressing user needs such as safety, visibility, and the integration of natural light within the infrastructure.
Expertise and coordination
Led by Eric Girard, principal partner architect and head of the firm’s public transit practice, the team of transportation architects played a key role in the project by ensuring consistency between the architectural design and technical and functional standards. The team developed a reference project to define, among other elements, stations, bus terminals, and maintenance and operations centres. By acting as an interdisciplinary coordinator, the team ensured that all project components converged in a cohesive and harmonious manner.
Commitment to sustainable mobility
STGM Architecture’s team continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable mobility and the balanced development of communities. The West REM, like other major structuring transportation projects led by STGM, goes beyond addressing road congestion issues; it also aims to bring communities closer together and promote environmentally responsible mobility.
Support from planning through delivery
In the context of major public transit projects, architects’ involvement as part of a lead consultant team extends well beyond the design phase of the reference project. They contribute to the preparation of performance specifications and support the client during the qualification process. In addition, the lead consultant team follows the detailed design, construction, and deployment of the infrastructure. Their ongoing expertise plays an essential role at every stage of the project.
The role of architects in large-scale transportation projects such as the West REM is undeniable. From initial assessment to station design and urban integration, through interdisciplinary coordination and a commitment to sustainability, their expertise is shaping the future of urban mobility.
The West REM is far more than a means of transportation—it is an architectural and innovative achievement that transforms how people move through and experience their city.
